PLC - "Programmable logical controller"
PLC is industrial computer. Something different than conventional computers, micro controllers. Invented and designed for special industrial applications. So, the question is - 1. what does it do ? And 2.Where it is used ?
Answer for the first question is, PLC is a device which can be programmed with required user define program to get desired output. "PLC actually read input signal, after that it executes user defined program and than generate output as per program". So basically it is programmed to get required output.
Second answer is, It is used in industrial applications where automatic operations required for critical and accurate systems.
Many different things are associated with PLC like, Hardware for input and output signals, operating protocols, wiring for all signals, power supply etc. If we talk about history of PLC than In the 1960s, the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) was invented for the automotive manufacturing industry used to replace re-wiring hard wired control systems with software program changes when production demands modifications in production line.
Now a days, so many PLCs are available as per application requirements, different manufacturers, control systems, different environments, safety standards and reliability options.
